What is the User Experience Design Process?
To break it down a little bit, as a UX designer, you first have to conduct some in-depth deep-dive research in the field and look for valuable data that will be used to create user personas. Based on the said user personas, you can then begin to map out the user journey step by step to create a flow map. From here, you can begin to create wireframes and prototypes which you will use to conduct the first phase of testing. The most common method of testing used in the usability testing.
It is important to carry out testing early on in the program to avoid unnecessary changes in the future that could cost the company money and time. This continuous process of testing and improving before going into development is called iteration. After several iterations, the product can then go to development.
What are the different roles & jobs in UX Design?
To better understand this section, we divide them into four groups using a model called the Quadrant Model. These groups include;
Experience Strategy (ExS) which handles the business part of UX, is all about devising a holistic business strategy, incorporating both the customer’s needs and those of the company.
User Research(UR) which handles both qualitative and quantitative research, gathering in-depth insights into the target users.
Information Architecture(IA) is responsible for assessing the IA of an existing product, planning the IA of a new product from scratch, labeling information, and creating wireframes and taxonomies.
Interaction Design(IxD) focuses on how a user interacts with specific elements of a digital product, it looks at the structure and behavior of interactive systems, and how they can be designed and optimized for human use.
It is however not limited to that, one can also choose a career as a UX Writer, a Voice Designer, a UX Developer or even a UX/UI Designer.
What skills do you need?
A combination of a bunch of soft and hard skills is needed for a successful career in user experience design. A substantial part of UX design is engaging and interacting with users most of the time, this calls for excellent communication skills to ensure you reach out to users and find out their pain points, their goals and their achievements when using your product. Articulating these correctly will end up saving you tons of time as well. Organization is also an important thing not to overlook, you have to be on top of every task you are given to make sure that no work lags. A lot of teams will be dependent on your work and results so it is best not to mess up.
Apart from those soft skills, you are expected to be able to conduct insightful user research combining various data collection methods and then convert that same data into a proper information architecture coupled with sitemaps and clear navigation structure which will eventually be converted into deductive wireframes and prototypes.
How important is a portfolio?
A portfolio is the only way a designer with little to no experience showcases their work. But it is not limited to newbies only, every UX designer should have a portfolio, no matter how long they’ve been in the industry or how much experience they have. Whether you’re a brand-new designer with just one project under your belt or a seasoned expert with years in the industry, you must have a polished, up-to-date portfolio.
A case study showcases to a potential employer your thought process in coming up with design solutions. Most employers use these case studies to weigh if a designer can fit into an establishment or what value they could bring. It is advisable to have at least three detailed and well-curated case studies in a portfolio.
Newbies could scan the internet for inspirations and mock projects that could be of value and create case studies around them to showcase on their portfolio to potential employers as a display of their skills.
